Industrial Hemp Pilot Program
Two important pieces of legislation have allowed New York State farmers, universities, and businesses to grow, process, and sell hemp as a research partner.
A8509/S6787 - Establishes industrial hemp as an agricultural commodity and declares the goal of New York to become "a leader in encouraging and supporting research into the growth, cultivation, uses, processing and development of industrial hemp and products derived from industrial hemp to benefit its people and to support New York farms and businesses"
Governor Cuomo's Hemp Initiatives
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been working hard to position NY as a nationwide leader in industrial hemp friendly regulations. He has made available over $10 million in grants and research funding and fully supports legislation to make it easier for farmers and businesses.
Hemp Processing Grants - $5 million has been allocated to help fund projects that are essential to processing industrial hemp.
Research Funding - An additional $5 million will be used to support Cornell University and SUNY Morrisville efforts to research best practices in hemp production.
Seed Certification - The Governor has pledged an additional $2 million for the creation of a program to certify New York hemp cultivars.
